Jesse “Kaimana” San Nicolas at age 14, a typical teenager enjoying his family, friends, first year in high school as a freshman, and an athlete heavily involved in football, baseball, karate, and mixed martial arts was diagnosed with High Risk Pre-B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) . Jesse suffered many months of unexplainable headaches, fatigue, and weakness until blood work finally revealed an unusual amount of white blood cells confirmed by his medical team as ALL on February 17, 2010.
Six-months of intense treatment began immediately that required Jesse (only child), and his parents to relocate to the Seattle area to be closer to the hospital for daily treatment. It has been a long and difficult journey, but with the incredible care of his medical team, the support of family and friends, and his faith, Jesse is determined to fight and beat cancer. Today, Jesse is back home and continues to receive monthly chemotherapy treatments at Seattle Children’s. He is in his 2nd year of high school as a sophomore working hard to become a “normal” teen again catching up with school work and friends. Jesse has already begun to work towards gaining back his physical strength in order to play baseball and football for his high school, and to compete in the ring again.
At any given opportunity, Jesse is determined to share his story with others, with the hope that his experience can help another child/teen and their families understand the emotional side of cancer, and to help find a cure for Leukemia.
